Sin Tema – meaning No Theme or No Subject. As musicians Sin Tema reserves the right to explore all styles and genres as they come…no boxes to stay in… no lines to avoid…no themes or subjects…just whatever we feel at the time... at that moment.
When singer/songwriter Cynthia Martinez and eclectic guitarist Francisco Guevara were introduced by a mutual friend their idea was simple; Cynthia would write lyrics and Francisco would write the music. After months of working together they met conguero Jimmy Lugo and Sin Tema was born.
As a singer/songwriter Cynthia is first and foremost a storyteller. She began writing as a teen and quickly realized that her lyrics flowed better in Spanish. As she continues to perfect her craft as a Spanish songwriter she is slowly venturing into the English side of her songwriting journey. She has learned that it’s the people around her who help create the stories which she sings about, their lives, experiences, hardships and triumphs drive her story telling and lyric writing. To her, music is what feelings sound like.
Self–taught, Francisco began playing guitar as a kid and fell in love with the sounds of classical guitar and jazz. His Latin roots coupled with his love for World Music have been instrumental in his journey to experience and explore different sounds and different guitars. Francisco remains open to trying new genres and adding to his extensive background, however, his heart definitely lies in the classical and graceful sounds of the acoustic guitar.
After meeting a well known Houston conguero, Jimmy was intrigued by the congas and set out to learn to play this Latin hand drum. After two years of training with his mentor and friend he began looking for a band that would welcome the warm rhythmic beats of the hand drums. His dedication and commitment to the congas as well as the beats he created were an ideal fit for Cynthia and Francisco and it wasn’t long before Jimmy became the third member of the band.
